Beware of Counterfeit US Currency
We have received reports of counterfeit $100 US notes. The notes were being passed in a Lower Mainland Shopping Centre by two males. The males were using the counterfeit $100 US notes to purchase small denomination gift cards from stores in the shopping centre, leaving the store with the counterfeit note and walking away with a $20 gift card their change from the transaction. The males hit several stores in one centre before being declined service by a store employee who recognized the note they were passing as counterfeit.
Vancouver's proximity to the US border makes us a target for this type of fraud because visiting US customers using US currency is not all that uncommon the region.
While we may already train our staff in detectiing counterfeit Canadian currency, sometimes US currency is overlooked.
