OFA Course Information

Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA 1)

This one-day (8 hour) certification course has been developed from the St. John Ambulance First On The Scene program.

This course meets first aid requirements for:

  1. WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1
  2. Canada Labour Code Basic First Aid

Upon successful completion, candidates will be issued a WorkSafeBC - Emergency First Aid certificate.

Lessons include:

  • Emergency Scene Management
  • Artificial Respiration & Assisted Breathing
  • Shock, Unconsciousness and Fainting
  • Choking (Adult)
  • CPR and Introduction to AED
  • Severe Bleeding
  • Minor Wound Care and Documentation
  • Medical Conditions

    Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA 2)

    This intense 35 hour course is designed for first aid attendants who work in urban settings but also applies to any industry for which WorkSafe BC Regulations require OFA-2 certification.

    In addition to the material covered in OFA 1 (above), contents include first aid for airway, breathing and circulation emergencies including:

    • Obstructed airway
    • Respiratory arrest
    • Distressed breathing
    • Bleeding
    • Shock
    • Adult CPR

    Other topics include:

    • Patient assessment
    • Spinal injury management
    • Hard collar application
    • Upper limb splinting
    • Minor wound care
    • Documentation

    The course can be offered in a variety of formats (i.e. weekdays, evenings, or weekends). Homework is assigned following each of the 10 lessons. Students should be prepared to spend 1.5 to 2 hours of home study per lesson.

    A full day written and practical examination is scheduled on completion of the course.  A minimum of 70% is required on both exams.  On successful completion of the examination, students are issued an OFA 2 certificate which is valid for 2 years.

    Pre-requisites: Participants must be 16 years of age or older and physically able to perform first aid skills. A medical examination is also required.
